I really like how Suze doesn't just go into the practical steps of financial management, but also the emotional side of money and any mental blocks that may be holding you back. She seriously comes across almost as a spiritual financial coach! Suze tries not to get overly detailed in any part of the book as not to overwhelm people and I think she succeeds.

While there were certainly parts I already knew, Suze definitely surprised me a few times with some great suggestions. One was thinking about downsizing your home before or at retirement. As a result, we are thinking about downsizing our home sooner than we may have otherwise. Some elements of this book are basic, but I feel the book deserves five stars for being holistic in its approach understanding the emotional relationship we have with money as well as its breadth in covering all the major topics of financial health.

Orman is able to frame financial literacy and self-advocacy as attributes consistent with the traditional female gender roles that many women feel pressure to conform to. This is a feat, as many women feel talking about money is taboo, selfish, or otherwise "unladylike". Orman explains how, in fact, being in control of your finances and not undervaluing yourself is a great act Suze Orman provides general and specific financial advice in a way that will be accessible and resonate with many women. Orman explains how, in fact, being in control of your finances and not undervaluing yourself is a great act of love towards yourself and your family.

Just as you need to put on your own oxygen mast first on the plan, you must also take care of your own finances first so you can be there for your family in the long-run and not end up creating a financial burden for those around you. I found her message very empowering, and Orman provides specifics to help the reader enact the promise to value oneself take financial control over her life.

Just like Dorothy's ruby red slippers, you will discover that you've had the power all along! This book should be mandatory reading for high-school seniors - better yet, required reading in a Personal Finance Class adopted into the curriculum for all high schools - I wish I'd had this information way back then.

As a procrastinator when it comes to facing certain areas of my own finances and woman closer to retirement than I like to acknowledge, this book was a much needed wake up call for me. I'm already taking steps to correct that and look forward to reaching the ultimate goal of living a clean and balanced life, thanks to Suze Orman's plan. This will likely become a great gift for many friends and definitely a book to share! Thank you.
