This book argues that there is still time, provided leaders, organizations, and individuals act. Omelchuck , , X, A rich Indian and European historiography of the Mughal State has long existed, and in the present century scholars have debated both its character and implications for the longer-term trajectory of the subcontinent. This book, as assembled by a leading specialist on Mughal studies and a socio-economic historian, brings together some of the key interventions in these debates.
It also features a detailed introduction surveying the main intellectual positions and outlining possibilities for future research. This book is the result of a collective attempt to give a general survey of the development of atomism and its critics in the late Middle Ages. All the contributors focussed on the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries atomists and anti-atomists, with a thorough examination of some important figures, as Nicholas of Autrecourt or John Wyclif, and lesser known as Gerard of Odo or William Crathorn for example.
From those essays on particular authors a new way of understanding the discussions of atomism in late medieval philosophy and theology emerges. This volume demonstrates the existence of strong and complicated connections between natural philosophy, mathematics and theology in the medieval discussions of the atomistic hypothesis. All chapters present a new research that will be of interest to historians of medieval philosophy, science and theology. Contributors include: Jol Biard, Sander W.

Derek Hastings here illuminates an important and largely overlooked aspect of early Nazi history, going back to the years after World War I--when National Socialism first emerged--to reveal its close early ties with Catholicism.
Although an antagonistic relationship between the Catholic Church and Hitler's regime developed later during the Third Reich, the early Nazi movement was born in Munich, a city whose population was overwhelmingly Catholic. Focusing on Munich and the surrounding area, Hastings shows how Catholics played a central and hitherto overlooked role in the Nazi movement before the Beerhall Putsch.
He then discusses why the Nazis embarked on a different path following the party's reconstitution in early , ultimately taking on an increasingly anti-Catholic and anti-Christian identity. This book is about Granular Computing GC - an emerging conceptual and of information processing. As the name suggests, GC concerns computing paradigm processing of complex information entities - information granules. In essence, information granules arise in the process of abstraction of data and derivation of knowledge from information.
Information granules are everywhere. We commonly use granules of time seconds, months, years. We granulate images; millions of pixels manipulated individually by computers appear to us as granules representing physical objects. In natural language, we operate on the basis of word-granules that become crucial entities used to realize interaction and communication between humans. Intuitively, we sense that information granules are at the heart of all our perceptual activities.

In the past, several formal frameworks and tools, geared for processing specific information granules, have been proposed. Interval analysis, rough sets, fuzzy sets have all played important role in knowledge representation and processing. Subsequently, information granulation and information granules arose in numerous application domains. Well-known ideas of rule-based systems dwell inherently on information granules.
Qualitative modeling, being one of the leading threads of AI, operates on a level of information granules. Multi-tier architectures and hierarchical systems such as those encountered in control engineering , planning and scheduling systems all exploit information granularity. We also utilize information granules when it comes to functionality granulation, reusability of information and efficient ways of developing underlying information infrastructures.
With the publication in of his first book, The Structure of Social Action, Talcott Parsons established himself as one of America's most important social theorists. Yet Parsons's essays from the decade preceding are virtually unknown to theorists and historians of sociology. By gathering the majority of Parsons's articles and book reviews published between and , Charles Camic supplies the first comprehensive selection of the writings of the "early Parsons.
Drawing upon extensive historical research, he identifies three overlapping but relatively distinct thematic phases in the early development of Paron's ideas: that on capitalist society and its origins, that one the historical development of the theory of action, and that on the foundations of analytical sociology. Camic correlates the emergence of these phases to Parsons's experiences at Amherst College in the early s, in London and Heidelberg during the mids, and at Harvard University in the important period from the late s to the mids.
Few great writers produced less than Jane Bowles: one novel, one play and a dozen short stories. Yet hers is one of the most original, unique voices in twentieth century American literature. In the late eighteenth century, as the English settlers begin steadily encroaching upon the Cherokee lands, the Nation divided among several towns and many chiefs? Profoundly ambivalent, ekphrastic poetry celebrates the power of the silent image even as it tries to circumscribe that power with the authority of the word. In the first book ever to explore this museum, James Heffernan argues that ekphrasis stages a battle for mastery between the image and the word. Moving from the epics of Homer, Virgil, and Dante to contemporary American poetry, this book treats the history of struggle between rival systems of representation. Readable and well illustrated, this study of how poets have represented painting and sculpture is a major contribution to our understanding of the relation between the arts.

ISBN issued The rousing story of the last gasp of human agency and how todays best and brightest minds are endeavoring to put an end to it.
It used to be that to diagnose an illness, interpret legal documents, analyze foreign policy, or write a newspaper article you needed a human being with specific skillsand maybe an advanced degree or two. These days, high-level tasks are increasingly being handled by algorithms that can do precise work not only with speed but also with nuance. These bots started with human programming and logic, but now their reach extends beyond what their creators ever expected.
In this fascinating, frightening book, Christopher Steiner tells the story of how algorithms took overand shows why the bot revolution is about to spill into every aspect of our lives, often silently, without our knowledge. But that was just the beginning. In Automate This, we meet bots that are driving cars, penning haiku, and writing music mistaken for Bachs.
They listen in on our customer service calls and figure out what Iran would do in the event of a nuclear standoff. There are algorithms that can pick out the most cohesive crew of astronauts for a space mission or identify the next Jeremy Lin. Some can even ingest statistics from baseball games and spit out pitch-perfect sports journalism indistinguishable from that produced by humans. The interaction of man and machine can make our lives easier. But what will the world look like when algorithms control our hospitals, our roads, our culture, and our national security?
What happens to businesses when we automate judgment and eliminate human instinct? And what role will be left for doctors, lawyers, writers, truck drivers, and many others? Who knowsmaybe theres a bot learning to do your job this minute. Open Minds, , Susan Kaye Quinn , , , When everyone reads minds, a secret is a dangerous thing to keep. Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can't read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can't be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves.
When she accidentally controls Raf's mind and nearly kills him, Kira tries to hide her frightening new ability from her family and an increasingly suspicious Raf. Thanks for reading this extra short to the point review for this tiny little book I didn't like very much. Raf is a mind reader in a high school where nearly everyone else can read minds as well. Too bad Kira, his best friend and the girl he has a crush on is a zero - someone who can't read minds and may never go through the change.
As Raf struggles to hide his true feelings from the other mind readers his "friends" make it widely known just how much they frown upon him taking interest in a zero. Mind Games is a stunning prequel short story that takes a look into how dangerous a world can be when near Raf is a mind reader in a high school where nearly everyone else can read minds as well. Mind Games is a stunning prequel short story that takes a look into how dangerous a world can be when nearly everyone can read minds. Raf's want to protect Kira is so unbelievably charming and sweet and what his friends do to him to prevent him from acting on his crush is gut wrenching.
After this intriguing glance, I can't wait to read this series. I must get Open Minds and its sequel Closed Hearts stat! I'm looking forward to getting entangled in the Mindjack world. What if everyone in your school could read minds, except you? Told from the point of view of Raf, popular boy in school and best friends with Kira since childhood. The problem is Kira is a zero, the name they give to those that missed the gift of reading minds.
Will they overcome What if everyone in your school could read minds, except you? This short story was a joy to read. Kira touched my heart and I wanted things to turn out for her.
Mind Games (Mindjack Origins #1) - Prequel to Open Minds
With characters like Raf and Kira and their friends and enemies, the series should be a good one. I read this short story after Open Minds, if you want the experience to learn things as Kira does in the novel, then I think it's good to read if afterwards, but it doesn't spoil anything if you want to read it first either.
It's written in first person from Raf's point of view and is set a few months before Open Minds, which is written in first person from Kira's point of view. I really enjoyed this for the mos Mind Games is a short prequel to the first novel in the Mindjack Trilogy, Open Minds.
I really enjoyed this for the most part. Reading from Raf's point of view is nice as it gives some insight into his mind and his view on Kira. It's not particularly needed to understand the series, but it's nice to read all the same. Something for those who want to read Raf's point of view. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a short story prequel to the Mindjack series.
Theoretically you can read this before the first book, but I did in in a reverse order. It's a very very short story, so don't be surprised when it ends! This little story gave us all a look into Raf's mind, his motivations, and his sappy puppy dog love for Kira. It was adorable and cute to watch him get flustered and beat himself up a bit. It brought me back to a time before Kir I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It brought me back to a time before Kira's life spiraled out of control. For fans of the series, this was a nice little gem to add to your kindle.
I loved the Mindjack series. Thought they were fun and interesting books that were an interesting premise in a day and age where sharing is often second nature and we're really only two steps away from open mind reading.

This story I felt didn't really give Raf something that I think he didn't already express in the book. In fact, it mostly made him sound more like an obnoxious teenage boy, and make me want to slap some of the other mind readers in the story. The whole world of the open mind read I loved the Mindjack series. I just didn't think this added anything to the trilogy.
Open Minds has been in my wishlist since it was released and reading this made me want to read it even more. Mind Games is the the prequel of Open Minds but is told from Raf's point of view. It is the perfect story to introduce the characters and the setting of the book - one that is so intriguing and fascinating it leaves you craving for more. Even though this is a short story, I could already guess how the mind-reading works, and boy, it is both scary and interesting.
I really enjoyed reading Open Minds has been in my wishlist since it was released and reading this made me want to read it even more. I really enjoyed reading this and hopefully, I'll be able to get Open Minds soon. It was alright to read and an OK introduction into the world the author's trying to build. I never fully understood what the "Mind Games" are exactly and it seems odd that that was left so ambiguous at least for me.
I'll try reading this series, but I'm kind of disturbed at the acceptance of mind readers in the future Quinn has created. I think it's honestly pretty unrealistic that it would just be accepted, but I'll probably get more into that in my review of the first full book in the se Eh. I think it's honestly pretty unrealistic that it would just be accepted, but I'll probably get more into that in my review of the first full book in the series.
Overall it was kind of cute, but just OK. She doesn't have to read thoughts to notice the ring of space around her. I think of them all as saved seats for me. This is a bitter sweet shot story. Raf's love for Kira was so true and so sweet. It was uncomplicated in his mind, because it was love without mind-melding, invading thoughts. And he could touch her, without second skin or any other "protection. I hate that he's no longer this Raf.
This is a high 3 stars. This is a short story prequel to the first book of the Mindjack Trilogy. I decided to read this short story first to get a feel for the premise of the series. It did intrigue me. However, I wasn't really thrilled about the High School scene. Seemed almost like Twilight in a way. But other than that, the plot and characters interest me. I'm looking forward to starting Book 1.
This is a short story that takes place before Open Minds. I think that it was great understanding Raf and his feelings for Kira. However, you don't get much in terms of the background story and I felt that if I hadn't started Open Minds I might have been a little lost with the story.
Overall a quick and enjoyable story. Susan Kaye Quinn does an amazing job with these characters. This is a very, very, very short story. In fact, that sentence was almost longer than the story. I really don't think it is worth paying for. It is like a short chapter in a book. If you like the Mindjack series, you will enjoy this short story about Raf and how he has had a crush on Kira for a long time.
But it is a very short "story". I received this book free to review from Netgalley. Such a complex character in a complex world. At times you love him and at times you just don't understand what he is thinking or feeling. Then comes this book. A unique and appreciated glimpse into the mind of one of the most complex under-rated characters of the MindJack trilogy. You will not be disappointed well I wasn't I enjoyed this story just fine, but it wasn't particularly stand out as short stories go.
I'm guessing this is because it's meant more as a sidenote to an actual series of novels. It was interesting enough that I will go on to read the first full length book in the series I'll have more to say I'm sure once I've finished that. Readers also enjoyed. Young Adult. Short Stories.
